THE SOCIAL NETWORK

John P. and I saw the Social Network sequel The Social Reckoning the other week.  It's actually pretty good--it reminded me of the earlier whistle-blower movie The Insider.  As the investigative reporter, Jeremy Allen White was pretty cool.

I've been reading A Concise History of Finland for my History Meetup. (Finland's relationship with Russia reminds me a bit of Canada's relationship with the U.S.A...) When I'm finished with that I'll be reading Katherine Boo's Behind the Beautiful Forever for my book club, about slum-dwellers in Mumbai.  I got it in a large-print edition, whose type size reminds me of children's books!

I've given up on the Meetup for people over 60, and I don't think I'll renew my Organizer fee payment when it comes up a few weeks from now.  For the Sunday afternoon History Salon I've returned to Chinese history (tomorrow afternoon is the Song Era) and may do that for a few more weeks, but I don't expect to get the interest that the group got under the previous organizer Tianjie.

On Wednesday Social Club 150 had a games night where I played Settlers of Cattan for the first time in almost fifteen years.  I chose my first position badly and finished last! (Now I can't wait to play again...) I've become a full member but there's some glitch in their website so I couldn't yet register for events as a member.  And I carelessly went home with my name-tag, so I'll have to bring it back to the next event.

We've reached the third season of The Gilded Age.  I'm actually feeling sorry for queen bee Aunt Agnes!  Spoiler ahead:

Her son lost the family fortune to scammers, then her mousy sister Ada saved the day with a big inheritance from her late husband, but now Ada's paying the bills and getting the last word on everything...

Yeah, it does sound rather soapy.

We've also been watching (for the second time) Mark Cousins' 15-part documentary A Story of Film.  I like his Ulster accent.

I've finally quit Taonga.  I haven't given up on Heroes of History, but I still need to get strong enough to win the Level 4 battle on The Frozen Plains.  And I've started a new game Klondike:  The Lost Adventure. (Is there a lost & found department for adventures?)
